Less than 2 hours from Le Vieux Manoir
Le Mans (1hr 15)
The highly picturesque Old Town of Le Mans, known as Le Vieux Mans, has cobbled streets lined with 15th and 16th Century architecture interspersed with Renaissance mansions. The streets can only be explored by foot and are well worth it. At no 11 Rue des Chanoines there is the 12th Century St Martin's Priory. You may also find the house built for Richard the Lionheart's queen, Berengonia, although it was built 250 years after her death.
On the sidewall of L'hôtel Aubert de Clairaulney in Le Mans, you will see the sundial placed by Claude Chappe in 1789 - Claude being the inventor of semaphore.
At the Cathédrale St-Julien there is a prehistoric standing stone - a menhir. Tradition has it that visitors should place their fingers in one of the little cavities in the menhir and make a wish.
